Detailed engineering and construction support for the Muskrat Falls project
The Muskrat Falls project is a Nalcor Energy initiative and included building an 824 MW hydroelectric generating facility and transmission lines sending power from Muskrat Falls in Labrador to the island of Newfoundland and to Nova Scotia. The commissioning of the generating facility is planned for 2020. It’s the second largest hydroelectric project carried out in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Grid Solutions Canada ULC, a subsidiary of General Electric Canada, hired BBA to install two 450 MW, 350 kV per pole, bipolar HVdc converter substations, two HVdc transition substations for marine cable crossings between Labrador and Newfoundland as well as three HVac substations and to extend an existing HVac substation.
Over 20 experts from various BBA disciplines—civil, structural, mechanical and electrical systems, project management and control—contributed to this major project. Our solutions allowed the client to lower construction costs by reducing the amount of steel used in gantries and by optimizing procurement activities, especially for long-term purchases.
Designed the building structures and foundations, as well as the foundations and structures of the electromechanical equipment for HVac and HVdc terminals and exterior substations.
Calculated line efforts and designed the gantry structure and foundations.
Performed a dynamic analysis of the structural concrete floor supporting the equipment.
Designed the mechanical and electrical services for the control room and CC valve halls
Designed the HVac system for the HVdc converter substations under severe constraints for critical equipment operation
Designed the spill containment system for transformer oils, fuel tanks and the distribution system for the diesel generator set
Provided the client with the procurement package and with support to protect against and detect fires
Participated in construction work supervision and quality control
Participated in preparing inspection and testing procedures
