The International Society of Automation (ISA) recently presented BBA with one of its annual awards in the Excellence in Technical Innovation category for its CAMaaS solution. The ISA is a professional association of engineers, technicians and managers involved in industrial automation.

  1. CAMaaS, which stands for “camera as a sensor,” uses artificial intelligence (machine learning) and image analysis techniques to convert cameras into sensors. The images the cameras capture are then converted into a value or state that can be linked to the database of a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system and to human-machine interface (HMI). The information that’s collected can be used to send automatic alarms.

“Understanding what our mining clients needed, I worked with my colleagues, Arbi Bouchoucha and Guillaume Boily, to develop this innovative solution that supports our digital service offering in several sectors,” says Serge Benoit, electrical engineer and CAMaaS product manager at BBA.

  2. Possible applications include the mining sector, where CAMaaS can be used to assess explosive dust risks, detect a blocked chute or prevent overflow from furnaces or ball mills. Hydroelectric facilities can also benefit from CAMaaS, especially to monitor dams and water flows.

“We’re thrilled that BBA’s approach to innovation is being recognized internationally. CAMaaS is an internally developed technology that supports our digital service offering in several sectors,” explains Arbi Bouchoucha, Ph.D., BBA data scientist, who attended the ISA awards ceremony.

The ceremony was held at the Bryan Museum in Galveston, Texas, on November 8. To find out more about the awards presented by the International Society of Automation: https://members.isa.org/isa-recognizes-2022-celebrating-excellence-awardees
