The aviation sector needs to significantly reduce its GHG emissions. Fortunately, recent breakthroughs in the use of low-carbon fuels are opening the door to a promising future for the sector—and BBA is proud to be a part of it.

  1. As part of the Sky’s the Limit Challenge, a Green Aviation Fuels Innovation Competition launched by Natural Resources Canada, the SAF+ Consortium recently received funding to support its efforts to market a low-carbon alternative to fossil kerosene offering an 80% reduction in lifecycle GHG emissions.

“The SAF+ Consortium’s technological approach offers a significant reduction in GHGs and will contribute greatly to the effort to decarbonize the economy. As an expert consulting engineering firm, BBA is committed to helping develop the business plan for our planet. We’re proud to participate once again by helping ingenious and driven minds like SAF+ implement their innovative technologies, which will help shape a more resilient world,” said Lyne Ricard, Director – Biofuels, Oil and Gas.

Polytechnique de Montréal and the SAF+ Consortium mandated BBA to install and operate a pilot plant specifically designed to produce jet fuel from industrial stack gases and green hydrogen. The process involves capturing the CO2 produced by these stacks and converting it into clean synthetic fuel with a carbon footprint 80% smaller than traditional aviation fuel.

The mandate comprised interconnection engineering, project management, construction management and the operation of the plant located in the east end of Montréal to produce the first few litres of product.

“We’re pleased to team up with BBA to develop and market innovative solutions that will help make Montréal a hub for responsible aviation in Canada, thereby contributing to the ongoing energy transition,” said Jean Paquin, President and CEO of SAF+ Consortium. “We believe that power-to-liquids (PtL) is one of the most promising roadmaps available for decarbonizing sustainable fuels. By using green hydrogen, it will accelerate the development of this key energy sector in the coming years.”
