      Henvey Inlet first nation 300 MW wind project

      Henvey Inlet First Nation (HIFN), a community with 200 on-reserve residents located some 90 kilometres south of Sudbury, sought to build a wind farm that would turn strong gusts into clean energy. Their vision was to own and operate a facility that would support the Band’s future development by providing emission-free electricity and sustainable revenues from the sale of power to the province. However, the HIFN community still needed to be convinced that the development would not come at the expense of the biodiversity and traditional sites located within their Reserve.

      Detailed engineering of a storage solution

      WindCharger is Alberta’s first utility-scale lithium-ion energy storage project and uses the new Tesla Megapack technology. It has a nameplate capacity of 10MW and total storage capacity of 20MWh, charged in approximately two hours. This technology supports fully “behind the fence renewable energy,” powered by TransAlta’s Summerview II wind. Additionally, the project brings great benefits to the grid in terms of fast response time, reactive power capability and frequency deviation response.

      Detailed engineering of a cogeneration plant

      Owned by Agnico Eagle, the Meliadine gold mining site is in Nunavut and isolated from the rest of Canada; it can only be accessed by boat or by plane. It has been one of the largest mining projects in Canada since 2015. A cogeneration plant had to be developed to power the site.
