Electrical equipment rehabilitation plan for the Bécancour smelter's (ABI) rectifier sets
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
BBA is responsible for planning and carrying out the 230 kV sub-station's rehabilitation project, mainly including electrical installations for ABI's 12 rectifier sets in the Centre-du-Québec region. The BBA team defined requirements, collected and analyzed data, prepared technical specifications for the required equipment, designed new installations, assisted with in-plant testing, and performed all on-site supervision, commissioning and performance testing services, without shut-downs. The scope of work included:
- Replacement of major equipment: 12 rectifier transformers (over 110 MVA) and 5 regulating transformers (116 MVA)
- Replacement and /or renovation of ancillary equipment : 230 kV breakers, 230 kV disconnectors, 230 kV bus expansion joints, 230 kV metering units, 230 kV lightning arresters, RC circuits, rectifiers, 600 V distribution, protection/control circuits, communications system
- Capacity expansion of the oil recovery system and addition of an oil/water separator;
- Addition of a 52 kV overhead standby line
- Addition of air conditioning in technical corridors for each electrolysis set
- Addition of a make-up cooling system in rectifier rooms
- Strengthening of the reactive power compensation, including harmonic filters
